Innovation that Actually Scales

This month we wanted to share insights from Amur's SVP, Head of Technology, Jeremy Gillam, on how Amur plans its technology projects, based on his article posted in the NEFA Note, a publication of the National Equipment Finance Association (NEFA).

“At Amur we are constantly updating our systems to ensure that they support our goal of making the financing process smoother, simpler and smarter so that we can best support the successful transactions of our partners and customers.”

Technology innovation is everywhere. New platforms, new tools, new promises of scale and more, but yet, in many organizations, innovation has not made the work meaningfully easier. For those of you looking to use technology to innovate, we hope that this brings you some food for thought.

Too many initiatives start by looking for a use for cool technology. The result is often a new layer of tools that redirects the work, but does not actually reduce the work. We've found that the most successful innovation usually has three things in common. It helps people make better day-to-day decisions, lets teams get more done without extra effort, and works naturally within how people already do their jobs.

The first characteristic is focusing on the goal. Real progress starts by identifying the moments that have the greatest friction for our partners, customers or employees and focusing on minimizing that friction. This helps our team deliver practical, lasting value.

The second characteristic is operational leverage. This simply means the work gets easier for your people as volume increases. In equipment finance, lost leverage appears as repeated data entry across systems, needing to chase paperwork or manual re-reviews. Innovation should create seamless systems that compound improvements, not create more work.

The third characteristic is native adoption. How do we know an innovation effort is working? We ask three questions. Did it improve a real decision? Did it reduce effort as volume increased? Did people use it without being forced? If the answer to any of these is no, there is more work to do.

Innovation is about building operating leverage in a relationship-driven business. When a smooth Amur financing experience helps you simplify and grow your sales, we all win.
